This service includes an individualized Orientation and
Mobility (O&M) comprehensive assessment and recommended training to reach
specific independent travel objectives. The O&M Specialist is a trained
individual who has successfully completed a professional preparation program of
Orientation and Mobility Training from a nationally recognized university.
O&M sessions may include lessons in pre-cane skills such as human guide as
well as indoor and outdoor long cane travel instruction. Lessons may also
include instruction in residential, semi-business, downtown travel environments
and required dog guide pre-training. The O&M specialist will work to meet
the consumer’s travel needs whether this is in a home environment, in the
community or at a job site. Maximizing safety and independence are underlining
objectives of all mobility lessons.
